Beckett in southern Africa

After I saw Endgame at the Duchess Theatre earlier this year, I wrote to the company, Complicité, and encouraged them to take the production to Angola. The Angolans, I wrote, will get Beckett in a way a lot of people in the overdeveloped world probably don’t. Alas, the reply explained, the company is currently too busy. Well, well, it seems someone’s beaten them to it anyway, taking Godot to one of South Africa’s largest townships, Khayelitsha, on the outskirts of Cape Town. Khayelitsha is also the place where I had the unfortunate experience of sharing Peter Hain’s bed. (Thanks to NC.)
