Waking up to the whispers of Harry Patch almost made me believe there was a God. He said, They never learn. There were two world wars. The third world war will be chemical, I don’t want to see it.
But it was less the content of Harry’s words than the profundity of his speech: the slow cadence of his whisper, the repetition of the word ‘lice’. To hear a clip, go here and click on ‘memorable interview’ to hear Harry, (making sure you turn off Radiohead at the top of the page). No doubt there will be politicians keen to capitalise on Harry’s wisdom. They will point a finger to Iran and jump up and down shouting Nuclear weapons! over and over. Meanwhile, the Pentagon can carry on making the biggest bomb in the world.
Imagine this: The precision-guided weapon carries more than 5,300 pounds of explosives and would be the biggest conventional bomb the US has ever used. It can deliver more than 10 times the explosive power of its predecessor, the 2,000-pound BLU-109, and penetrates to a depth of 61 meters before exploding.
And if you can’t imagine, don’t worry: soon, you won’t have to because it’ll be there, doing its penetrating into half of Afghanistan or Iran or some other alleged centre of tyranny or barbarism… all in the name of world peace.
And because it’s not nuclear, perhaps noone will notice.
